She promises to follow on foot in three days. She is captured on the road. She is held for fourteen months. By the time she is freed, her daughter has been carried across borders, raised under another name, by the family who saved her. Twenty-seven years later, Marie is a data scientist in Freetown. She has spent her career building an AI system that reads the fragmented records of the war, the transit logs, the camp registrations, the handwritten notes of aid workers, and reunites families that the conflict separated. She has also, quietly, been using it to look for her mother. One afternoon the system finds her. The Road is Long is a film about what it costs to find something you never stopped believing you could find, and the particular courage it takes to knock on a door twenty-seven years after it was closed.
